I LOVE donuts! Whether they are from a gourmet bakery or good old Tim Hortons, I love them all! With my daughter’s upcoming third birthday in mind, I wanted some beautiful “inst-worthy” donuts, but besides Tim Hortons, I actually haven’t heard of any local donut shops where I could get some. Also, with our current lockdown in Ontario, getting out to a bakery (especially with two littles) would be really difficult even if there was somewhere to go!
I have always wanted to make my own donuts, but making them from scratch seems very overwhelming! Especially with a toddler who always wants to help! LOL So essentially, I want beautiful donuts (that match the colour scheme of any event) with minimal effort.. So here is my hack…Grocery store donuts!
I bought plain donuts from the grocery store and added my own glaze and sprinkles! By getting pre-made donuts, you can save the step of making donuts but you can decorate them however you want. I tested my theory with these cute valentines donuts. Sadly, I wasn’t able to get the heart sprinkles I originally had my mind set on (because they are not easily accessible right now!) but I happened to have a few red and pink sprinkles in my pantry (no idea how old they are but sprinkles don’t go bad..right)!?

I would still like to learn how to make donuts ONE DAY! But for now, I am happy with how quick an easy these were! See below for the instructions and the recipe below.
Step 1: Buy pre-made donuts! With our weekly grocery order, I added “Donut Time Glazed Donut Rings” for $1 – that’s right they cost only ONE DOLLAR for six donuts. These ones are from Walmart, but I’ve seen them at our other grocery stores as well.

Step 2 : Make the glaze (the recipe is below*). Put the glaze in a dish wide enough to accomodate dipping the donuts into.
Step 3: Dip each donut into the glaze and set on wire rack so the glaze can drip off. Change the colours for a few donuts or each donut if you want!

Step 4: If you want to add sprinkles, sprinkle them on top immediately before the glaze “dries”
Step 5: If you want to drizzle glaze on top, set your donuts in the fridge for a few minuts after you dip them. to allow the glaze to harden. This way you can more distinctively see the lines of the drizzled glaze on top and doesn’t just blend in. You can see the difference below, the lighter donut looks better than the darker pink donut because I let the glaze harden in the fridge for 5 minutes). Once the glaze is at least a little bit hard, drizzle glaze on top. I used a small icing tip to drizzle, but I think you could also use a ziplock bag with a tiny hole cut into it. And that’s it! Your donuts are and oh so cute!! Enjoy!

Glaze Recipe
1.5 cups of icing sugar
3 tablespoons of milk
1.5 teaspoons of vanilla extract
Food colouring of your choice (I like gel!)
*Put the above ingredients in a bowl and whisk everything together for a few seconds. It’s that easy!
Let me know if you try this out! I’d love to see your colour combinations!
